ESTA is the Electronic System for Travel Authorization that has been put in place to replace the American express
American express

visa-system in the United States for certain countries. This is part of the Waiver System (commonly shortened to VWP) and is a way of sorting your entry easily via the online application before you make your trip to the US. Just note that this is a travel authorization. By using this online service, you can travel to the United States for business or for pleasure over the duration of 2 years, so long as your trip lasts no longer than 90 days.
The ESTA is valid for the entire duration, and you can make multiple trips to the USA during this time so long as your holidays or business trips to the U.S follow the requirements for ESTA.
The travel program was created by the Department of Homeland Security of the United States, permitting citizens of 40 nations, the freedom to travel to the United States of America without needing to apply for an official American visa. The ESTA application can be completed online within 20 minutes. An approved ESTA allows you unlimited entry to the United States as long as each visit is no longer than 90 days.
Citizens whose country is participating in the Visa Waiver Program are qualified to apply for ESTA. It is important to know if you are before you arrange any travel plans for the USA.

The decisions around adding or removing countries from the VWP are complex and whilst officials for the tourism sector are keen to include more countries to boost the US economy

There are now talks about the VWP being rebranded to reflect that it is part of the USA security framework, rather than just an easy way to get access to enter the USA. Over the next few years, there could be many changes to the VWP, as the Department of Homeland Security continues to review the situation.
