ESTA is the Electronic System for Travel Authorization that has been put in place to replace the American express visa-system in the United States for certain countries. This is part of the Waiver System (commonly shortened to VWP) and is a way of sorting your entry easily via the online application before you make your trip to the US. Just note that this is a travel authorization. By using this online service, you can travel to the United States for business or for pleasure over the duration of 2 years, so long as your trip lasts no longer than 90 days.

The ESTA is valid for the entire duration, and you can make multiple trips to the USA during this time so long as your holidays or business trips to the U.S follow the requirements for ESTA.

• Citizens from these countries currently benefit from being able to apply for an ESTA if they wish to visit the US for business, tourism, or transit purposes. The process of applying for an ESTA USA is much quicker and simpler than the application process for an America visa, so it is very beneficial for citizens within the VWP list of countries when they want to travel to the USA.

2018, Hungary was considered to be taken out of VWP due to the high volume of passport fraud.

In addition to the 3 EU countries mentioned above as being possible additions to the VWP in the near future, experts have also suggested that Argentina, Brazil, and Israel could be included in the VWP at some point soon.

The decisions around adding or removing countries from the VWP are complex and whilst officials for the tourism sector are keen to include more countries to boost the US economy, that is not the key concern. The prioritization of security is a big determiner in whether countries are added or removed and with the terrorist acts that have taken place in recent years, improving the security of the US Customs and Border Protection is a key factor in VWP decision-making.

There are now talks about the VWP being rebranded to reflect that it is part of the USA security framework, rather than just an easy way to get access to enter the USA.
